Dive into 6 weeks of wood turning to build on the fundamentals and hone your skills in both spindle and bowl turning. Learn how to turn a lidded box, make cleaner cuts with your turning tools, as well as new mounting and finishing techniques to turn items like plates, trays, and shallow bowls. Techniques to be covered: General Tool sharpening techniques using guides and freehand Milling and gluing stock Projects Lidded Jar, Plates/coasters and bowls Spindle Portion Creating clean cuts and minimizing tool marks with the following tools: Spindle detail gouge Using the spindle gouge to create beads and coves with a cutting technique vs a scraping technique. Polish spindle technique to achieve smooth surfaces in bead and coves that require minimal sanding and minimize chances of catching. Skew Chisel Using the skew chisel to make planning cuts and work on technique to achieve smooth flat and tapered surfaces that require minimal sanding. Work on technique to polish and clean up v-cuts and end grain. Scrapers Using scrapers in tandem with main cutting tools to clean up shapes and surfaces to achieve smooth surfaces Bowl Portion Creating clean cuts and minimizing tool marks with the following tools. Bowl Gouge Using the bowl gouge for foot surface flattening, outside shaping, and inside hollowing. Revisiting push cuts, pull cuts, and scraping cuts to achieve smooth surfaces across the board Avoiding catches and mastering tool presentation Identifying and making grain supported cuts Scrapers Using scrapers to clean up inside of bowls to achieve a smooth finish. Identify when and how to use scrapers while avoiding catches Spindle Detail Gouge Using the detail gouge to clean up tenons safely, the only time that’s appropriate to use this tool in a bowl turning scenario Mounting techniques - learn different ways to mount different kinds of stock safely and securely for different stages of the turning process. Creating clean secure tenons Using Live Centers for the roughing process and turning tenons Mounting thin stock using jam chuck and sacrificial stock approach
