About this course

The dovetail joint has long been seen as a mark of fine craftsmanship, and while its status may be somewhat overblown, laying out and cutting dovetails is still a critical skill for much traditional joinery–especially casework and drawers. The dovetail is beautiful and strong, and while it takes lots of practice to master, it is a much more forgiving joint than many expect. In this class we’ll cut a full set of practice dovetails in a softwood and then employ the joinery in a beautiful, rustic tool/utensil tray. Beginner joints won’t be perfect, but they’ll get better as we work our way around the box, and by the end of class we’ll be much more comfortable with this fundamental skill of hand-tool woodworking. Basic woodworking experience is required to join this class. Students needn’t be experts, but they should be somewhat familiar with how to use, care for, and sharpen their own hand tools.
